First impressions of the DR

Thursday saw us renting a car and exploring around Puerto Plata. It was an easy process as the car was delivered to the marina, we paid in advance in cash so all we had to do at the end of the 2-day rental was to return the key to the marina desk and they arranged for the car to be picked up again. Driving in the DR proved to be.. Read More

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Our 2-day passage from Fajardo, PR to Puerto Plata, DR with Steve as crew was an interesting downwind trip. It started off in light winds under motor but by the afternoon of the first day, the wind filled in and we had some great downwind sailing. Seas became a bit lumpy as we passed the Mona Passage between PR and the DR, so the preventer lines came in handy to.. Read More

Puerto Rico

A short update tonight as we have an early start tomorrow. The trip to Fajardo was good but in very variable conditions and more motoring than we would have preferred. We enjoyed a short visit to the El Yunque Rain Forest this morning and Steve arrived this afternoon. Our next trip to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic is expected to take us around 51 hours so we expect to arrive on.. Read More

Float Plan update

I am finishing up last minute laundry while Howard is on his way to Road Town to check us out of the BVI. The wind is favorable for us to make a start today. So, we plan to go as far as Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas (USVI) this afternoon, then go to Puerto Del Ray Marina near Fajardo, Puerto Rico tomorrow where we will await the arrival of our crew,.. Back in Nanny Cay

I know you don’t need to be told because you can see for yourselves from our tracker page, but just in case you haven’t been there today, we are now back in Nanny Cay Marina, having had a most enjoyable broad reach back from North Sound in fresh 20 to 27-knot Easterlies with the sun shining …. what more could we ask for? We flew just the genoa most of.. Read More

Bitter End YC

In between our tasks, such as setting up an improved system for our preventer lines to avoid accidental gibes when in a sea, familiarizing ourselves with the Salty Dawg weather forecasting system (using Chris Parker) daily check-in via SSB and making sure they have links to our tracking system, we have explored some more of the Bitter End. The photo of the two of us was taken while hiking the.. Read More

Getting to know the Salty Dawgs

Through various events, Happy Hour to celebrate Cinqo de Mayo and a birthday (Jackie’s) in the Bitter End Crawl Pub on Tuesday and Michael Bean’s pirate show in Leverick Bay yesterday, we are gradually getting to know the Salty Dawg fleet. They hail from many different ports, mostly along the Eastern seaboard of the US and Canada but there is also at least one boat owned by a Scottish couple… Read More

North Sound

Thank you all for whatever you did to persuade the powers that be in Nanny Cay Marina to enable us to splash the boat back into the water on Friday afternoon. We did the final touch-ups that morning and made sure all sea cocks are functioning properly but we didn’t know the yard could fit us into their schedule until we were informed around 2:30 that the boat was already..
