We saw water temperatures above 82 degrees F in the Gulf Stream but today they have dropped to around 78 so it is clear we are well through the stream. There are, however, a few eddies around, one of which we unfortunately encountered last night, which slowed our progress by more than 1 knot. However, we are now enjoying bright skies, some sun and much better progress so spirits are high. We remain on port tack (no change since we left Hampton) and close-hauled. The only disadvantage of port tack is that it makes washing-up a challenge because the sink doesn’t drain well. We just might have to tack soon so we can clear out the sink of dirty dishes (and make some more Easting before we approah the Trades)!!!

We are in close contact with our weather forecaster, Chris Parker, who has been advising the fleet how best to avoid any possible inclement weather and make the best progress. I commend the way he manages to tailor strategies for individual boats, especially given that the fleet is so spread out; it can’t be an easy task.

We are beginning to shed some layers of clothing and again have our appetites so we must be settling into our way of life at sea. We have adopted a 3-hour watch system but because I (Hope) do most of the catering and communications, I have only 2 watches whereas Howard and Ed each have 3. It seems to be working out so far.
