We thoroughly enjoyed our short time in St Croix and found it to be quite different from the rest of the Virgin Islands, larger, less crowded, more fertile, older trees, Danish influence seen in the older architecture and still some menus are in Danish, even though this and the other US Virgin Islands were handed over to the US in 1917 for the princely sum of $25,000,000. We also enjoyed the tour of the Cruzan Rum distillery….
Great sails in both directions! Now we’re off to St Martin this weekend – yea!

Blue skies, super sun-tanned Hope, some history and botany discovered – guess you must be very pleased you are not in the snowy Eastern seaboard of the US this winter – just been listening to the weather reports for Washington etc this w-e!! Trust you have a good sail to St Martin – look fwd to next report! xoxo

Re St Croix: definitely different from the rest of the VIs, …the Scandinavian influence very prominent. And (when we were there) much poorer too.
Re Washington/Blizzard: we’re 10 miles due north of DC. Right now (Sat 23/01/2016 00.14 GMT/Zulu) ’tis v impressive….approx 8 inches snow so far and falling hard..predicted to last for another 36 hrs and >2-3 feet total with winds up to 50 mph soon. General consensus is we won’t be dug out ’til Tuesday.
So Hope…wanna swap??!!
Bon voyage J

No thanks! We’re quite happy here in the sunshine while you deal with that mess. Stay safe and don’t overdo the shovelling. With the closing.of the refinery in St Croix about 7 years ago, the population declined about 20% and crime started to rise. We saw many (quite nice) properties on the market, much evidence of security (buildings, dinghies, etc.) and quite a few vagrants but we got the impression that things are picking up. Jim Beam acquired Cruzan Rum about 8 years ago and production has increased dramatically….
